(More customer reviews)While I like the look of this bird feeder very much: appreciate how much seed/fruit/nuts it holds: and am amazed at the amount of birds it attracts, (perhaps because of it's size and color) we're not crazy about what else it attracts. This product states that it's squirrel proof. Not only is it not squirrel proof (since we go outside to find squirrels hanging from the side of the feeder and emptying it quite quickly)but it also seems to attract and feed rats. cringe worthy, but true....we evidently have a rat family living underneath our pond. They climb up the tree, across the branches and hang off the side of the feeder as well, having no trouble eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have good taste because we only use high grade nuts, fruits & berries in the feeder. At first we couldn't figure out how a feeder of such large size could be empty within 4 or 5 days. Perhaps the "cage" around the feeder needs to be moved a bit further away from the holes in the inner plastic feed holder so animals can't reach it? In any event, the feeder does it's job and we've now become avid bird watchers in our own back yard. A bit of a redesign might be in order.

I hung this feeder out today, because my local bird store told me it would keep out larger birds.Well, the grackles just love it.They've been hanging on it all day.Their long beaks easily reach through the cage to get the seed, and they've been jealously guarding it as their personal food source all morning.Sorry songbirds!

(More customer reviews)I found this terrific, but filled with a host of problems you won't soon forget. Not even a day passed before my squirrels popped the lid off the top.There is no electricity at the top to stop them. I spent another $20 and quite a few hours and modified the top and wiring to electrify that as well. Thank goodness I am handy. This could prove frustrating if you are not handy, nor clever too. The birds can't get to the seed at the last 2" from the bottom and that quickly rots and drives the birds away.The inside is especially difficult to clean and I needed a long stick to pry out the damp solidified seed and a lot of patience to clean it.A lot of what looks like metal in the photos is silver painted plastic and while I assembled it right from the box I broke the plastic top off and had to return it for another. Don't plan to hand the metal wire bar in the picture over the branch or you will break the top right off.You need to hang this off a wire. The holes for suspending the metal wire bar are especially poorly designed.The battery cover is attached with tiny screws so be prepared to lose them. All of these problems could have easily been remedied by the staff that designed it. What a shame they didn't. Overall its excellent at keeping squirrels away.I was so inundated with sparrows after the squirrels were gone I scratched my head and wondered what have I done?

However, if you are buying this feeder for entertainment, forget it. What happens is the squirrels will each get on it ONCE! They will proceed to be thrown off and that is it....they will not try it again, because they know the result. If you really are hoping to see more, you might try having the battery alternate in off/on mode so the squirrels will be confused, but I doubt they will come back.

(More customer reviews)We live in New Hampshire and cannot have most bird feeders in the summer because they will be destroyed by the black bears.This is the first bird feeder that we can hang high in a tree and not have it emptied by the local red and gray squirrels.Before we got this we tried the usual approaches:

Red pepper - Spraying the feeder with an oil and pepper mix didn't work.
Cage-type feeders - This works for gray squirrels, but any cage with a small enough mesh to keep out red squirrels will also block the birds.
Baffles - A regular feeder needs to be 8 feet from any branch or the squirrels will jump to it.This is impossible to arrange in most trees.

This Squirrel Scatter feeder is a very simple solution.We have it hanging on a branch outside our second-story window.It only takes one or two experiences with the shock from this feeder and even the most determined squirrel will leave it alone.Every now and then a squirrel will stop back and very carefully attempt to eat from the feeding ports.The mild shock immediately sends him scrambling away.The construction quality also seems quite good.Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)This is the first truly squirrel proof feeder that I've found, and believe me I've had several! My home backs up to a patch of woods, so critters are abundant. As long as this is placed away from the trees or other structures that the squirrels can launch from, it is impossible for them to get the seed. However, I had to move the feeder from it's location to put in a new deck, and when I tried to put it back, one extension arm broke off as I was trying to put the auger back into the ground. I now have it supported by the remaining two arms wedged under the edge of my deck. Overall an excellent product. I've had this for over a year.

Squirrel Stopper Liberty Universal Squirrel Stopper Baffle Review

(More customer reviews)climb up into the baffle and popped the top piece off that closed the open hole on the top and slipped through the top of the baffle. The baffle comes with several of these depending on the thickness of your pole which one you use. My husband had wondered about this piece from day one if this was too flimsy and could be pushed off by the squirrels and sure enough they finally figured it out.We bought ours directly from the makers of this baffle and I emailed them about two days ago and haven't heard back. Some how I feel we aren't the only ones to discover this. We will have to do one of two things now. Either put a thicker ABS over the pole so there is no need to use the piece they push off to cover the gap or some how secure the top piece so it can not be just pushed off. We were very disappointed to see the squirrel on top of the birdfeeder and I think we spent like $60.00 some for ours a year ago.
Update 6-14-10 Well finally got ahold of Dr. Kim Sena who owns and founder of this and he sent me more gaskets and I tried the smaller gasket that is more snug against the pole. It has been about 1 month and the squirrel not only chewed the gasket off but also the hard plastic top cover pieces. So now not even a replacement gasket will fit on the top of the baffle. I emailed Kim back and have yet to hear back from it and it has been several days. He says this is the first time this has happened but some how it is hard to believe my squirrels are that much smarter than the garden variety squirrels. One thing that might work or at least for awhile is to stuff hardware cloth up into the baffle to prevent squirrel from climbing up inside to chew on the gaskets. You may want to try their more expense Squirrel Stopper with slick metal pole that probably prevents them from climbing the pole in the first place.

Update 6-17-10 got an email back from Dr. Sena and he will send me another baffle and he wants to keep in touch and try to figure a way to prevent squirrels from circumventing this baffle.

Update:7-30-10 We have stuffed hardware cloth up into the baffle and it seems to keep the squirrels out so far.

Why in the world would they put that huge sticker (just look at the picture) on there and glue it on there like that?There is no way I was going to put that baffle out in my yard with a big label on it, so I had to get it off.I have removed many stickers in my life, but that was bad!

I am using a squirrel resistant feeder ( cage drops down from squirrel's weight to close seed openings )and it still works great. They don't even try to jump on any more and have to depend on whatever the birds throw out to scavenge...I wound up using an all thread rod through the top of the feeder to transmit the torque from the twirler as it broke a clothes hanger rod I had fashioned. 100% satisfied!!!

Duncraft 1744 Champion Squirrel Blocker Platform Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)We have had the less expensive plastic version of this feeder for a few years.It has been a good feeder, but it's finally disintegrated.We bought the all-metal Champion feeder as a replacement.Duncraft has addressed all the design deficiencies of the previous plastic version:

- The mesh at the bottom of the unit is much smaller, so seeds won't fall through as easily.With the previous plastic version, we had to insert a piece of window screen material to keep seeds from falling through the larger holes in the mesh, and that meant one more item to clean.

- The white grid is now a one-piece epoxy-coated metal unit, and is more rigid than the previous two-piece metal and plastic grid.It can be cleaned easily with a bottle brush.

- The roof is metal, which will avoid the problem with the previous version of the roof cracking where the metal vertical supports were inserted, as well as avoid the problem of the plastic mottling and fading.

The bottom line is that this is an improved version of what was already a good feeder.We recommend it.
