(More customer reviews)While I like the look of this bird feeder very much: appreciate how much seed/fruit/nuts it holds: and am amazed at the amount of birds it attracts, (perhaps because of it's size and color) we're not crazy about what else it attracts. This product states that it's squirrel proof. Not only is it not squirrel proof (since we go outside to find squirrels hanging from the side of the feeder and emptying it quite quickly)but it also seems to attract and feed rats. cringe worthy, but true....we evidently have a rat family living underneath our pond. They climb up the tree, across the branches and hang off the side of the feeder as well, having no trouble eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have good taste because we only use high grade nuts, fruits & berries in the feeder. At first we couldn't figure out how a feeder of such large size could be empty within 4 or 5 days. Perhaps the "cage" around the feeder needs to be moved a bit further away from the holes in the inner plastic feed holder so animals can't reach it? In any event, the feeder does it's job and we've now become avid bird watchers in our own back yard. A bit of a redesign might be in order.

Perky Pet 449-2 Oriole Feeder Review

Perky-Pet Four Fountains hummingbird feeders, and can quickly empty them.Buying larger hummingbird feeders was not entirely satisfactory since all have feeding ports which exclude non-hummers.I got this Opus oriole feeder so the orioles would have their own large capacity feeder.

My feeder has springy buttons in the nectar ports which act as bee guards. (Note: The image on this page differs slightly from the feeder I received.)Initially the orioles and hummers explored the feeder but were unable to figure out the bee guards.After a few days I removed the bee guards, which involved undoing a few screws, and thereafter both orioles and hummers used the feeder.

The feeder disassembles into three parts: the clear plastic reservoir bottle and the two parts of the orange base.The bottom of the base houses the adjustable perches.If you submerge your feeder to clean it, this part will require some shaking and draining, but this is a minor matter.All parts of the base which touch the nectar are readily accessible for cleaning.

This is a good feeder for those crunch times when a lot of nectar is being consumed, but the orioles really prefer the Perky-Pets.Finally, _I_ really prefer a glass reservoir and just couldn't give five stars to a feeder without one.

Squirrel Stopper Liberty Universal Squirrel Stopper Baffle Review

(More customer reviews)climb up into the baffle and popped the top piece off that closed the open hole on the top and slipped through the top of the baffle. The baffle comes with several of these depending on the thickness of your pole which one you use. My husband had wondered about this piece from day one if this was too flimsy and could be pushed off by the squirrels and sure enough they finally figured it out.We bought ours directly from the makers of this baffle and I emailed them about two days ago and haven't heard back. Some how I feel we aren't the only ones to discover this. We will have to do one of two things now. Either put a thicker ABS over the pole so there is no need to use the piece they push off to cover the gap or some how secure the top piece so it can not be just pushed off. We were very disappointed to see the squirrel on top of the birdfeeder and I think we spent like $60.00 some for ours a year ago.
Update 6-14-10 Well finally got ahold of Dr. Kim Sena who owns and founder of this and he sent me more gaskets and I tried the smaller gasket that is more snug against the pole. It has been about 1 month and the squirrel not only chewed the gasket off but also the hard plastic top cover pieces. So now not even a replacement gasket will fit on the top of the baffle. I emailed Kim back and have yet to hear back from it and it has been several days. He says this is the first time this has happened but some how it is hard to believe my squirrels are that much smarter than the garden variety squirrels. One thing that might work or at least for awhile is to stuff hardware cloth up into the baffle to prevent squirrel from climbing up inside to chew on the gaskets. You may want to try their more expense Squirrel Stopper with slick metal pole that probably prevents them from climbing the pole in the first place.

Update 6-17-10 got an email back from Dr. Sena and he will send me another baffle and he wants to keep in touch and try to figure a way to prevent squirrels from circumventing this baffle.

Update:7-30-10 We have stuffed hardware cloth up into the baffle and it seems to keep the squirrels out so far.

(More customer reviews)Like most bird enthusiasts, I'm SO SICK of squirrels.They're always hanging on--and damaging--my feeders, and they deter birds too.And, of course, they devour my seed so I wind up buying 5 pounds of seed, 4 1/2 of which goes to the resident furry-tailed rats!

So I bought this in a move of desperation.If this hadn't worked, I was prepared to take my feeders down--no fewer than SIX squirrels were hanging off of, or under, my feeders, and it's a full time job for me and my dog to keep them away!I can't claim there are NEVER squirrels around my feeders.Since switching to this food, I have yet to see a single squirrel actually hanging from my feeders.They will, however, eat the stuff that's fallen on the ground underneath (I'm sure there's some "old" food down there that they liked too).I've got a decent amount of property, so I've noticed what's also helping is to buy some bulk dried corn to put out for the squirrels elsewhere on the property--the squirrels (AND other, new birds we haven't seen here before!) hang out at the corn, and my feeder is spared the company and damage of squirrel mouths.

I'm pretty pleased.I give it four stars only because the squirrels aren't completely deterred--but they're definitely not hanging on my feeders, and they're definitely not spending nearly as much time here as they were with my old food mix.

It's the most widely used feeder I have other than the thistle feeder.This feeder keeps the red winged black birds and other "seed hogs" from eating all of the seed, but allows the smallest birds such as finches to eat.It only takes a few days for the finches to figure out how to get under the cover. Once they do, they'll use this feeder more than others.It also keeps snow and rain out of the seed (a big plus in Minnesota).

(More customer reviews)We have this feeder and although things started off looking good, they quickly changed. At first the squirrels would try to feed and the mechanism worked well and the leaves covered the feeding holes. The squirrels left and we thought all was good. Then we noticed they were staying around more. I took a close look at it and guess what, they have chewed the plastic around the feeding hole so that now it is larger than the leaf covers. They can eat to their heart's content. Also, chipmunks do not weigh enough to make the mechanism work. From day one, the chipmunks were able to feast to their hearts content. The idea behind this feeder is good. However they need to put metal around the holes. That would make it more squirrel proof, however, chipmunks could still feast. Don't waste your money on this one, unless the manufacturer starts to put metal around the holes.

(More customer reviews)We are looking for another feeder, so when I got to this page I thought I would tell you why this is the one we're going to purchase.

We got our first `7536' feederover 10 years and we still like it.For one thing it holds an entire grocery store size bag of sunflower seeds and for anotherthe birds love it.Frequently both sides are filled with our feathered friends while there are others waiting in the tree for their turn.[Thus our interest in another feeder.]

Presently we have Chickadees, Nuthatches, Cardinals, House sparrows, Wrens, Gold finches, the occasional flicker and small woodpecker visiting.When we lived it Texas it was convenient to exclude those pesky, though attractive, jays.

Initially I think (okay--my memories a little faded after a decade!) it did keep the squirrels at bay, but that hasn't been the case for many years.In fact, our local `free-range' squirrel has the glossiest coat you can imagine.But we don't really care as he is so jealous of the feeder that he keeps other intruders away.

The lapse in squirrel-proof-ness is probably due to years of collected grime and dust that clog the springs.That and just the passage of time.

Four Stars.Our feeder is doing just fine after 10 years.I think the other reviewer is wrong in saying that this feeder is available for less money.I think what he has seen is the one sided version of this same feeder.I say this because we have searched around a bit in order to save money.

And about the squirrels--we saw a PBS special one time that showed what a gray squirrel would actually do for lunch. They had these squirrels climbing, jumping, and riding in little wagons through a long tube to get to a bird feeder.I concluded after watching those experiments that `proofing' was a ridiculous notion.LOL.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product because the squirles were eating all my bird seed. I was happy with the product and it was easy to assemble, fill and hang. My only complaint is that in order for it to be 100% squirel proof it needs to be hung at least 18 inches from the nearest post. My hanger only has about 12 inches of clearance, so it's not 100% squirrel proof in my situation, but it still cuts down on the amount they can reach, and my seed that used to be gone in 2 days has lasted over 2 weeks now. It would have been helpful to have that stipulation on the outside of the box instead of only on the insert inside the bos, or else I would have taken that into consideration in my purchase. On the whole I am happy with the purchase.

Brome 1015 Squirrel Buster Classic Review

(More customer reviews)No, maybe squirrels can't get inside the feeder, but they don't have to. All they have to do is shake it or set it to swinging, and seed goes all over the place. Then they take what seeds they want out of the resulting mess and leave the rest to rot. They can trash a feeder's worth of seed within a week. I'll be looking for yet another feeder as soon as I can afford it.
