This is a nice item.I got it to keep the squirrel away from the bird feeder, and it did work for 1 day because the squirrel figured out how to get the food out of the feeder and he ran with the whole thing. It's empty now and looks like the picture.

Squirrel Jungle Gym Feeder, by Achla Designs Review

I'd have to concur with I. Page about this item. The corkscrews do indeed look too big to comfortable put an ear of corn on.I've found that anything larger than 3/8" screws/eyelets will split the ears as they are screwed on.I have a Squirrel-Go-Round that I've lengthened the arms on, and that alone puts a new twist on the entertainment factor.I will probably design my own jungle gym, using this as a base to start from, but using more available materials.Make the crossbars able to move in 2 planes with a cable top to bottom, and use 5/16" screws for 5 ears.

I Page, I'd suggest that you use 1/4" or 5/16" lag bolts to put the corn on.I've got 5 5/16" eyelets on the Squirrel-Go-Round, lengthened the arms to 24" (22" from medalion to eyelet) and put 12" plastic party platters on as baffles.14" platters would probably be perfect, give the squirrels just enough that they a bend around and get one kernel, but not be able to grab the ear and then hang from it with their hind feet. The 12" platter dissuades all but a few, even if they all will try to get at the corn. This gym design has promise, and with a few refinements it will be the charm...

The bird feeder arrived with numerous cracks in the plastic where the hanging mechanism is attached. Also, the spring that closes the feeder is much too rigid allowing, at its lowest setting, for even a heavy crow to land without closing. Obviously, I am not very happy with the purchase though it appeared to be a good idea. It needs much better quality control!

They love this thing.I recommend having it face a window where you can watch them play. They will usually hang upside down and twirl it around, while eating.

We already wore out our first one and decided to replace it.The first one lasted nearly a decade.

It's such a simple design, but they seem to really love it.The nails are nice and long, so it holds the corn cobs on really well.

Hiatt Manufacturing 38079 Stokes Select Squirrel Lunch Box Review

Hiatt Manufacturing 38079 Stokes Select Squirrel Lunch Box
Average Reviews:

I've had this feeder for two years now, and I have to say I LOVE watching the squirrels and larger birds play around it.
One of the best features, I think, it the plastic screen that keeps the food in -- and therefore dry. It raises up just enough for some to come out for the squirrels and birds to pick at is from the perch, and of course they can get some more by reaching under (the squirrels) or sticking their heads under (the birds - mostly blue jays) the screen.
I didn't have this problem last year, but this year some of the squirrels figured out that they could remove the screen by lifting the lid and pulling/pushing the screen up and out. I haven't seen them do it yet, but they did it three times before I decided to try to put an end to it. To that end, every time I fill it I now tie the lid shut by wrapping plastic string around it several times and triple knotting it underneath. So far (for that last two weeks), it's seemed to work.
I've also recently tried putting peanuts in this. The squirrels and birds seem to love this, but they don't eat the peanuts at the feeder -- they carry them off. Possibly to store them for the winter. But as a result I think I may swish back to putting regular feed - or sunflower seeds - in it.

Songbird Essentials All Weather Feeder Squirrel Cage Review

Songbird Essentials All Weather Feeder Squirrel Cage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cage is well made, simple to install, and does prevent squirrels from accessing the opening. However, the other main reason we purchased it was to keep the grackles from flying to and scaring all the smaller birds away, which the description DOES mention the cage deters. We have a LOT of grackles come spring, and early summer!
I don't mind grackles eating, I even strew seeds and peanuts on the deck for the larger birds, squirrels and chipmunks. But the grackles still manage, prefer even, to hang onto the edge and stick their heads inside to get at the sunflowers.I've never seen a dove attempt this.So the majority of the seed STILL goes to the darned grackles!
The smaller birds do still get inside when they get a chance, but once those big grackles come swooping down, away the little ones flutter.I also haven't noticed many cardinals on the feeder.I don't think the squirrel cage openings are quite large enough for the cardinals to feel comfortable enough to squeeze through, despite what the description says. They kind of fly around seeming to try to figure out how to get in.Although, if the openings were larger, that would defeat the intended purpose!
My husband mentioned that if the diameter of the perch and cage were larger, the grackles couldn't reach the inside seed, just what's dropped onto the bottom, which isn't that much.So maybe if the feeder (at least the bottom perch & cage) was constructed with a little more thought, it would work much better with it's intended purpose as a larger animal deterrent.

32 oz. Sweet Corn Squirrel Log Review

32 oz. Sweet Corn Squirrel Log
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using these for many years. They are ground up whole corn. When squirrels eat off of corn cobs they eat just the tiny germ and then discard the rest of the kernel creating a big mess.

I live deep in woods virtually surrounded by State Park/Lake/Wildlife Habitat, Towns Habit, County Habits and Audubon Lands. Off my house is a tree level 30 ft X 30 ft deck with many METAL bird feeders on two sides hanging out into the woods. There is no way to totally protect them from the squirrels, who eat up plastic and wood, but using long, nearly horizontal hangers for feeders and safflower seeds for those that hang close to rails helps to discourage squirrel chewing. Squirrels aren't supposed to like Safflower but I have one pregnant female who eats safflower. ;(

Anyway I keep two logs out at all times for the many, many wild (obese) squirrel "pets" that live here. I can usually go through "only" about 6 logs a week (and some wildlife feed scattered on deck) as long as I bring one of the logs in every night that the opossums steal if left out.

I haven't observed any other birds showing much interest in the logs other than the Crows. They love them. We have several families of Crows who visit daily to eat the logs,Safflower seeds, and woodpecker's special suet (squirrels favor that one too).

BTW... On the few occasions we run out of Squirrelogs and are not successful hitting the few stores around that carry them but always seem to be out we have had to use corn cobs. Between the crows and squirrels we have to replace the cobs every hour or so. AND THE MESS!!!!!

This price from this seller is the best I have found even with shipping. And with one exception the packages from our local sources always have bugs in them ... the one that doesn't has the initials is PS.

You wont go wrong getting this product. I used to use the little wood seat to hold the logs. After the novelty wears off a strategically placed screw holder that comes with some of the packaged logs works fine and gives appropriate viewing pleasure. One local seller sells packages that icludes a holder screw in each package; others sell packages without the screw holders. The prices are pretty close. I have a huge collection of the screw holders and haven't yet found another use for them.

I bought this as a gift for my grandfather who is having sqirrel trouble. I thought it would help keep the sqirrels away from his birdfeeder. Unfortunately, the sqirrels get bored with it and go back to the bird seed. They were hysterical to watch, but don 't buy this if your trying to lure sqirrels AWAY from your birdfeeder.

Product Description:
The balance beam squirrel feeder was specifically designed to challenge squirrels and provide maximum viewing pleasure for it's owners. It's amazing what kind of acrobatics the squirrels will do to get at the corn on this feeder. Watch for hours as the squirrels study the feeder and try to figure out the best way to get down the chain and get to the corn. The feeder is balanced to match a squirrels average weight. This weighting makes the feeder tip to a vertical position if the squirrel ventures to far out on either side.

Heritage Farms Squirrel Diner, Squirrel Feeder Review

After spending a lot of time and money trying to keep the squirrels from ravaging my bird feeders, I finally gave in and got them their own feeder! After looking at many different squirrel feeders, I selected the Squirrel Diner, mainly because it was made of metal, rather than wood (I didn't think a wooden feeder would really hold up under rain & snow, nor keep the feed from getting soggy & gross).

The feeder is solid, heavier than I thought it would be, and some of its design features give it advantages over the wooden models. First, the lid protects the feed from rain and snow, while still being easy for the squirrels to lift. I filled the feeder with a mix of whole, unsalted peanuts and a seed/dried fruit/nut mix I found. It took the squirrels some time to figure out how to access the food. The feeder has no perch for them to sit on, so they have to figure out how to hang on to the vertical slats and push their heads up under the lid. Once they do this, they can hold on to the edge of the container and dip their heads in for a mouthful. Not all of them have figured this out yet, and it's fun to watch them try! I like that they can't actually perch on the feeder and stuff themselves on the food...it would be empty in a day if they could. They have to work a bit for it, get a mouthful, and then go sit on a branch to eat it. One very small black squirrel realized he could climb completely inside the feeder to pick out what he wanted! Since they can't perch, don't hang the feeder too high, because they sometimes fall off!

While they're learning, the squirrels have tried chewing on the vertical slats to no avail, and this is another advantage of the metal feeder. They really can't damage it like they can a wooden version. Best of all, the squirrels are spending less time trying to defeat my bird feeders!

All in all, a good, solid feeder.

UPDATE, JUNE 2009: Well, the feeder is still holding up! However, one determined squirrel managed to chew apart the thin, plastic sheets that prevent the food from spilling out, although he only managed to bend the vertical, metal slats a bit, not break them. There are metal tabs inside the feeder that hold the sheets of plastic in place, so I decided to replace the clear plastic with thin sheets of aluminum (found at the hardware store in the aisle with the dryer venting parts). I cut these to the same size as the plastic sheets and just used the metal tabs to hold them in place. With this, the feeder is up and running again, except the squirrels will not be able to chew through the aluminum plates.
